Every wedding has its own unique character and some manage to really etch themselves into your memory. Di and Andy’s recent wedding was definitely one of those, an amazing two-part celebration that perfectly captured their love for each other and their love of the Lake District.
The day began with the official “I do’s” at Carlisle’s stunning registration office. The entrance may be via the very modern glass walled atrium of the council’s office building but climbing the stairs and crossing the walkway transports you into the historic Lady Gilford’s House. The ceremony room with its gorgeous wood-panelled walls provides a wonderfully warm and intimate setting for a legal ceremony. The made a lovely, serene start to what would become an incredibly memorable day.
Then came the main event, the part that truly set Di and Andy’s wedding apart: a humanist ceremony atop Latrigg Fell. We’d been blessed with weeks of glorious sunshine, but as luck would have it, the weather decided to throw a curveball on their big day. Arriving at Latrigg car park, the clouds looked ominous, and as we ascended, the wind whipped up and rain began to fall.
But Di and Andy weren’t going to let that deter them. Their closest friends, equally as determined, braved the elements right alongside them. And despite the challenging conditions, the ceremony itself was utterly amazing. Against the dramatic backdrop of the Cumbrian fells, they exchanged vows, performed a beautiful handfasting ritual, and exchanged rings, all while the elements raged around them.
Following the ceremony there was champagne to celebrate and then some breathtaking portraits. The challenging weather just made the natural beauty of the Lake District shine through, providing a moody backdrop of Derwentwater and the Lakeland mountains. These photos, I’m sure, will be cherished reminders of an extraordinary day.
This wedding was, without a doubt, an experience I will never, ever forget. Di and Andy’s willingness to embrace the weather and celebrate in such an adventurous way was quite inspiring.
